Upon arriving to your appointment, your massage therapist (or front desk staff) may have you fill out some paperwork if you haven't already. This paperwork usually will consist of an intake form and personal health history. It is recommended for your initial appointment, that you plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to provide you with sufficient time to fill out the necessary documents.
Once completed, your RMT will review your health history with you to ensure that there are no contraindications for receiving massage therapy and identify any areas of concern which may require treatment modifications. It also provides your RMT with a basis to create your treatment plan.
Your RMT may also perform a variety of assessments to get a better understanding of your current complaint or condition. These assessments may consist of a postural assessment, palpatory assessment, orthopaedic manual testing or range of motion assessment.
Prior to performing any assessments or treatment, your RMT must obtain your informed consent. Informed consent is a process that provides the client with the ability to make decisions about their health care.
During your initial appointment, you can expect your RMT to explain the following:
- Summary of Treatment to be Received
- Explanation of Purpose of Treatment
- Risks and Benefits of Treatment
- Alternative Options for Treatment
- Likely Consequences of Not Receiving Treatment
After a discussion with your RMT, you should feel confident and comfortable with the proposed treatment plan and empowered to ask any questions you may have about the treatment.
After your RMT completes the review of your health history, assessment and receives your consent for treatment, they will exit the treatment room to provide you with privacy to undress and prepare for treatment. Your RMT will also inform you of how to position yourself on the massage table. Your RMT will knock and await your approval to re-enter the treatment room and proceed with the massage therapy treatment.
Your RMT will also communicate with you throughout the treatment to verify your comfort levels with the pressure being applied, if you are experiencing any pain or other related symptoms. If you would prefer your RMT to apply more or less pressure, just let them know and they will adjust accordingly.
Upon commencement of the treatment, your RMT will inform you that the treatment is now complete and ask you to take your time getting off the table and get dressed once they leave the room. After dressing, your RMT may recommend additional sessions, stretches, or exercises to maximize the benefit of the treatment. Your RMT will also ask for feedback on the treatment and how you are feeling. Depending on your response, your RMT may make further suggestions.
During the treatment plan, your RMT will provide you with their recommendations for undressing based on the techniques that will be used and areas to be treated, however, it is your right as a client of a Registered Massage Therapist to decide how much clothing to remove. Your RMT will be able to treat you fully clothed if that is how you feel most comfortable.
The level of undress during treatment is always up to you. Any areas that are not being currently treated will remain covered at all times during the massage therapy treatment. Sensitive areas such as the gluteal cleft and genital area must always be properly protected from exposure without exception.
Only at the client’s request, may the RMT uncover areas of the client’s body that is not actively being assessed and/or treated for the client’s comfort (such as for temperature regulation).

It is normal to experience delayed onset muscle soreness following a Massage Therapy treatment, and may experience this within 24-48 hours following the treatment.
